caldwell curates: week of 11/4
The weekly round up of the best of the best that I have seen, heard, read, watched, wanted, ate, or you name it!
Watch: American Son on Netflix
Watching a movie for me is usually a three day affair, I am not good at sitting down and it is usually a challenge to find a movie that can hold my attention, but American Son was able to do just that. For a little background, American Son was first a play and then Netflix bought the rights for it. At times it can feel like you are watching a play that was filmed since the entire movie takes place in one room, but that aside the dialogue and content is unbelievable. The movie centers on a woman, played by Kerry Washington, who is looking for her missing son, while facing racial prejudice from the cop. The film addresses issues of race, socioeconomic differences, and our own biases in a way that makes every single character relatable. This is not a story where there is a clear good guy and bad guy and justice will always prevail. The ending does not wrap the story up with a pretty bow, instead the exact opposite it pulls that bow apart and you have to watch as the ribbon frays. Please watch it so I have someone to discuss it with!
Chow: Sweet Chick
I love fried chicken. No matter the time of day or time of year, it is an appropriate time for fried chicken. I have heard nothing but great things about Sweet Chick in the East Village so I figured it was time for me to try it. I went late on a Saturday afternoon with my friend Connor and we were able to quickly get seats at the bar. Since it was between brunch and dinner, they were serving a limited menu, but they had what I wanted: chicken and waffles. I have never seen a variety of waffles offered, but I decided to go with the rosemary and mushroom waffles, which were delish. When they brought our food, they also gave us a couple of different butters to try. This fried chicken simply took my breath away. I am already plotting my next visit!
Side bar: chicken and waffles became a popular dish during the 1930’s and 40’s in Harlem during the jazz movement. People would stay out so late listening to jazz that they couldn’t decide if they should have breakfast or dinner so the combination of chicken and waffles was born!
Covet: Signet Rings
I love a good pinky ring, I know most people think pinky rings and think of The Soprano’s, but I think they are so chic. While I already have a signet ring with my monogram, I saw this one and loved the modern twist on a classic item and it was a “C” so doesn’t that mean it’s meant to be?
That’s all for now! I’ll let you know what I find next week!
